Effect of High Intensity Ultrasound on the Mesostructure of Amorphous Hydrous Zirconia

In the present work, we have studied the combined effect of both sonication and pH on the structure of amorphous xerogels precipitated from zir conium (Ⅳ) oxynitrate and propoxide solutions.By use of small angle neutron and X-ray scattering techniques (SANS and SAXS) it was established that sonication af fects the mesostructure of amorphous xerogels (i.e.changes in their homogeneity, surface fractal dimension and the size of aggregates of primary particles).ZrO2nH2O precipitated from zirconium propoxide solutions under ultrasonic treatment was found to possess very structured surface characterized by the surface fractal dimension 2.9-3.0 compared to 2.3-2.5 for the non US-assisted synthesis.Ultrasound induced structural changes in hydrated zirconia governs its thermal behavior, namely changes the rate of tetragonal to monoclinic zirconia phase tran sition.By use of thermal analysis we have established that ZrO2-nH2O obtained in alkaline and neutral media from oxynitrate without sonication contain notable a mount of adsorbed ions (for instance, NO3-) compared to ultrasound-assisted synthesized ZrO2-nH2O.
