Composite Materials Reinforced with Plasma-Activated Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fibers with Nanocrystalline Structure

The mechanical properties and fracture mode of polymer composite materials (CMs) which are reinforced with Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethy.lene (UHMWPE) fibers were investigated. It was found out that non-equilibrium low-temperature plasma treatment of the UHMWPE-fibers increases composite bending and shear strength by a factor of ~ 1.7.This phenomenon is explained by the formation of chemically active centres on the surface of plasma-activated fiber. These centres can be observed through an optical micro scope as white stripes coming from the fiber and exten ding into the matrix.
