Effect of Anisotropy on Dendritic Growth in Adaptive Phase Field Simulation

  A phase field model in two dimen sions with surface energy anisotropy is used to simu late dendritic solidification of a pure material.The computations were conducted using a robust adap tive mesh finite volume algorithm.The effect of a wide range of anisotropy on dendiritic growth was examined.The growth rate of the dendritic tip ve locity increases nearly linearly with the increase of the anisotropy strength when the anisotropy is lower than 0.1.However, as the anisotropy overreaches the value, the growth velocity increases slightly with further increase of the anisotropy.In addition, iso therms of the dendrite with the high anisotropy can be parabolic due to the cooler growth environment as compared with that of the low anisotropy.
