Experimental Study on Surface Roughness of GH169 Machined by Hard Turning with CBN Cutting Tools

  Surface roughness of machined me chanical parts and components has significant influ ence on many performance characteristics of prod.ucts including wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and fatigue strength.The traditional machining of high-temperature alloy GH169 using cutting fluid pollutes the environment and new cutting tool mate rials such as cubic boron uitride (CBN) has been used for dry machining of difficult-to-machine materials.In this paper, turning of GH169 by CBN cutting tools in dry conditions is studied.The effect of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on sur face roughness is investigated by using Taguchi method.The results reveal that the most significant influencing parameter on surface roughness is feed rate followed by cutting speed, while depth of cut has a minor effect.As well, the optimum cutting pa rameter combination is recommended and compari.son of results with the literary is made.
