Preparation of Pd/c Catalysts for Electrochemical Oxidation of Formic Acid

Carbon supported palladium catalysts for formic acid electro-oxidation were prepared from palladium (Ⅱ) carboxylates Pd3 (μ-RCO2) 6 by different reduction methods.SEM and cyclic vol tammetry (CV) were used to characterize the sam pies. The catalysts were found to generally consist of palladium nanoparticles with the diameter of 2-8 nm and large agglomerates 10-20 μm in size. The relative standard deviation of catalysts ranges from 17 to 60 %.Electrochemical tests revealed that both the donor-acceptor properties of substitutes R in the carboxylates and reduction methods affect the catalytic activity. Also the method of the carbon support (Vulcan XC-72) preprocessing is very im portant. We found out the optimal conditions for preparation of the catalyst with the highest activity. It was shown that palladium (Ⅱ) carboxylates can be successive precursors of electro-catalysts for for mic acid oxidation with the activity comparable to the activity of the commercial samples.
