Effect of Ambient Pressure on Splat Formation Process and Coating Cdhesion Strength in Plasma Spraying
Ni powders were thermally sprayed onto AISI304 substrate using low pressure plasma spraying at designated ambient pressures. The top surface, bottom surface and cross section morphologies of the individual splats collected on the fiat substrates were evaluated using scanning elec tron microscope and focused ion beam, respectively. The microstructures and adhesion strength of coat ings deposited on blasted substrates were also exam ined.According to the results, the shapes of the splats changed transitionally from splash type to disk one with the decrease of ambient pressure. The in fluencing factors on the splat formation process of thermal sprayed particles were investigated.Dense coating could be achieved in low pressure plasma spraying, in particular, coating adhesion strength increased gradually with the decrease of ambient pressure, which agreed well with the changing tend ency of splat shape.Accordingly, coating perform ances could be predicted through observation on the flattening behavior of the individual splat.
