Liquid Penetration Phenomenon During Semi-solid Rolling from Gas Atomized Powders

Under an H2 atmosphere, the green strips have been prepared from Al-5.8Zn 1.63 Mg-2.22Cu-0.12Zr (Wt.%) powders by the semi-solid rolling process. The effect of heating the powder at 610 ℃ (i.e.fs is 53 %) for different holding times on the microstructure evolution, espe cially the liquid penetration phenomenon of strips was investigate. Results shown that high degree of liquid penetration can accelerate the disappearance of primary particle boundary in the plane of contact and the change of powder primary boundaries. With increasing holding time from 10min to 30min at 610 ℃, the amount of η (MgZn2) phase decreased and more particles Al2Cu precipitated at grain bounda ries. The optimum holding times for Al-5.8Zn-1.63Mg-2.22Cu-0.12Zr (wt-%) powders is sug gested between 20 min to 30 min during semi-solid rolling at 610 ℃.The present experimental analysis suggests that semi-solid powder rolling can be opti mized to manufacture strips with high mechanical properties.
