Problem-Based Learning in Chinese University Teaching:A Student Perspective

Problem-based learning is a constructivist approach to education. It was first applied in medical education in Canada in the 1960s and has since been spread into all kinds of disciplines over the whole world. It is, however, not very popular in Chinese education. Therefore, further research is needed to investigate whether PBL is suitable in Chinese university context. The present paper introducesPBL to Chinese university students and tries to investigate their opinions on PBL.They reviewed the theoretical basis and the evidence of effectiveness of PBL.The Seven Jump of PBL was applied in a course on educational psychology. The students reflection on their experiences was collected and analyzed. Some problems of PBL in Chinese university context were found.First, the students are interested in brainstorming but have difficulty in analyzing the results of brainstorming.Second, the students lack the habit of searching and reading literatures themselves, which results in less self-study, and further leads to low quality of reporting their findings.Third, students discussion skills need to be improved.Still, most students are satisfied with their experiences of PBL and the above-mentioned problems can be solved with more training in this new learning environment.
