Student-centered Bilingual Teaching of Fundamental Mechanics to Engineering Major
Globalization brings both opportunities and challenges to higher education in recent years.Bilingual teaching has been encouraged by the government and adopted by most Chinese universities in order to meet the requirements of intense international communication and cooperation, and to improve the global competition ability of the graduates. This paper presents a student-centered bilingual teaching methodology proposed by the authors based on years of teaching experiences on bilingual teaching of fundamental mechanics to engineering-majored undergraduates. The objectives, teaching schedule, and teaching techniques should be set and adjusted according to the students level and progress.Questionnaires and face-to-face assignments assessing are good ways of understanding the learning progress.Gradual increase of the portion of English used in class is usually necessary for junior undergraduates of non-English majors.Question-and-answer, you teach, and class discussions are effective in promoting the students active participation, which in turn arouses their interests and improves their learning efficiency.
