Integrating Teaching,Learning and Doing:A Case Study of Education in Environmental Informatics
Sustainable development and responding to climate change require the support of effective information, especially effective environmental information.The course of Environmental Informatics provides students with a tool to systematically analyze environmental problems by integrating information technology and environmental science.Students will learn how to efficiently and effectively organize the available data to solve environmental problems through lecture and discussion.In order to improve the teaching effectiveness, its important to show the students how to participate in such class activities and ask them to conduct them by themselves.The integration of teaching, learning and doing is a basic concept used in the teaching of Environmental Informatics because knowledge and practice should go hand in hand.Three activities are designed for the students.Firstly, six experiments on the use of GIS software are used to test their understanding of specific knowledge.Secondly, the students are divided into groups and determine their own topics regarding the design of environmental information system.By presenting their work to all the other students, they show their ability to use the tool of environmental informatics.Thirdly, the students are invited to join several research groups to work with experts on projects with different themes, including low-carbon information system, environmental risk information system, water resource management system etc.Therefore, they can get real experience in environmental informatics.Generally speaking, integrating teaching, learning and doing is a very useful way to promote education in environmental informatics.
