On Teaching the Course Sociology of Disaster to Students of Civil Engineering Featuring a Social View on Disaster
Sociology of Disaster is an optional course for the master students in the college of civil engineering of Tongji University, which is set against the background of frequent occurrence and increasing influence of disasters in the world.Different from the traditional courses concerning engineering structures, the main purpose of this course is to cultivate in students of civil engineering a social view on disasters.The basic features of disasters, the relationship between humans and disasters and the effects of disasters are incorporated in the course.In the practice of teaching by the first author, disasters are emphasized for their relationship with human beings in terms of their germ, occurrence, spread, settlement and even prevention.A self-studied case is collected and analyzed by the second author, who is a student of civil engineering.
