The Setting and Teaching Methods of Bilingual or English-only Intellectual Property Law Courses in China:An Example from Tongji Law School

Before offering a bilingual or English-only course, universities from non-English speaking countries should think over what knowledge student should and can learn at certain stages. As to bilingual or English-only Intellectual Property (IP) courses for Chinese students in Law School, on the basis of surveys conducted among students and years of teaching experience, we suggest the following ideas should be taken into account to make them fit into the reality in China: (1)Bilingual or English-only IP law courses should not be offered earlier than basic law courses such as Legal English and Civil Law; (2)Mandatory or required IP courses should not be lectured totally in English; (3)We suggest that bilingual or English-only selective IP courses should be offered to Junior or Senior students by using the modified Socratic Method combined with Lecture Method. The primary aim of this combinational model is to guarantee the positive learning on the part of students before and during the class. Therefore, learning materials should be carefully selected, shaped and given to students before the class and evaluation measures should be taken to ensure students walk into the classroom with a prepared mind.
