The Influence of Soil Properties on the Ground Vibration Due to Railway Traffic and Other Sources -- the Comparability of Different Sites

If ground vibrations are measured at different sites, the soil properties may be different even if the two sites are close together. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the soil properties of both sites to eliminate a possible influence of the soil. The contribution presents the methods of measuring the dynamic soil properties, wave velocities in time histories, dispersion by SASW, SPAC and F-K evaluation methods, identification of the soil profile, material damping, and transfer functions. These methods have been applied mainly for train induced vibration and to assess the effect of different railway tracks, elastic or stiff track elements, damages or repair of railway tracks, or the influence of train speed. Some examples are given to demonstrate the evaluation of the lay ered soil profiles and how strong different soil properties can interfere with the evaluation of any pro jected improvement.Differences of soil properties should be taken into account even for a single measuring site and the ground vibration should be measured on a line of measuring points which is usually also necessary for the indispensable determination of the soil properties.
