Effect of Nonlinear Soil Behavior on Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction

  It is of fundamental importance to understand the soil-structure interaction (SSI) charac teristics in the vibration environment arising from earthquakes, wind, traffics or construction activi ties.While considerable effort has been made in the past decades, the dynamic interaction effect is not yet fully understood because of the complexity and uncertainty involved in the problem.Various simplifications have been used in practical applications by ignoring the effects of flexibility, nonlin earity and inhom.ogeneity inherent with the natural soil.This paper presents a simple and rational method to allow for these effects in dynamic soil-structure interaction.Examples are given to illus trate the attractive performance of the proposed method and the importance of soil nonlinearity in modifying the response characteristics of the structure.
