Study on Rail Corrugation Due to Train/track Dynamic Interaction Based on in Situ Tests

Short pitch corrugation is a well known rail surface defect that many railways are suffer ing from.Recently rail corrugation has also become a serious problem in Beijing Metro, wherein the corrugation was observed not only in curves, but also in some straight lines with vibration mitigation fasteners. Moreover, the corrugation in the straight lines is more severe than that in curves. In situ hammer excitation tests and train-induced vibration tests were carried out to study the dynamic char acteristics of the metro track structure to gain some insight in initiation mechanism of corrugation. Also, the dynamic behavior of the metro track was analyzed numerically. The frequency response function was obtained, using the analytical track model. The influence of the speed on the track vi brations was studied as well. The coupled vehicle-track model was used to find solutions for preven tion of rail corrugation in Beijing metro line. The research results indicate that the rail/wheel reso nance phenomenon and low damping around 250-350 Hz is one of the sources of the rail corrugation in the metro track with vibration mitigation fasteners. It was also shown that avoiding the rail/wheel resonance (e.g.adjusting the rail pad stiffness or slowing down the train speed) can be effective for corrugation prevention.
