Effectiveness of Under Sleeper Pads in Insulating the Train-Induced Ground Vibrations
A vehicle-track-ground model containing a fully-saturated poroelastic half-space was es tablished to investigate the insulation effectiveness of under sleeper pads (USP) to the train-in duced ground vibrations. The whole system was solved by a semi-analytical method using Fourier transforms and Fourier series. The aim of present study was to (i) investigate the effectiveness of the USP insulation to the train-induced ground vibrations at both the sub-critical and super-critical train speeds (the critical speed is defined as the Rayleigh wave speed of the ground surface), and (ii) to study the effectiveness of the USP insulation to the ground vibrations with a two-phase poro elastic soil model. The effectiveness of the USP insulation to the ground vibrations was evaluated at both the sub-and super-critical train speeds. It was found that the USP effectively reduced the free field ground vibrations at the sub-critical train speed, but the USP insulation effectiveness was much minimized at the super-critical train speed. The USP could reduce the excess pore water pres sures effectively in the ground during the passage of the train.
