Three-dimensional Analysis of Active Isolation by Closed Square Open Trenches Using Grid Method
A numerical investigation on the effectiveness of closed square open trenches in reducing the ground vibrations due to dynamic loads is presented. The study applies the three-dimensional grid method in time domain incorporating matched non-reflection local artificial boundary conditions and symmetric plane conditions. The influence of three key geometrical parameters on screening ef ficiency of rectangular open trench is studied. The results point out that increasing the depth or width of a trench may improve trenches reduction effect. But the influence of the width of the trench is limited.Although the influence of the depth is more significant than that of the width, it may va ry with the changing of normalized distance between the trench and a load source. The normalized depth is suggested to be from 0.88 to 1.0, while normalized distance is suggested to be 1.5 to achieve the best isolation effect. In addition, increasing the depth and the normalized distance has remarkable influence on the location of most unfavorable screening zone.
