2-D Analysis of Open Trench as Active Barriers due to Point Load in Saturated Soil

This paper presents a study on the problem of the ground vibration screening effective ness by open trench as active barriers in homogeneous saturated ground. The investigation is accom plished with the aid of the semi-analytical boundary element method (BEM) in cooperation with the basic solution of the thin layered method (TLM).Consequently, a two-dimensional (2D) semi-an alytical BEM model is put forward, where the TLM basic solution is employed, to use open trench as active barriers to screening vibration induced by point load on the ground.Effect of the model parameters on effectiveness of vibration isolation by open trench is investigated and discussed in de tail. The results show that open trenches are efficient to isolate the ground vibrations due to the point load. The distance between point load and barrier has large effect on the screening effective ness. And when trench depth is less than a Rayleigh wavelength, increasing the depth results in a light increase in the screening effectiveness, while the width also has large effect on vibration isola tion efficiency.Furthermore, the porosity of saturated soil has no effect on the screening effective ness, while the permeability has some effect on the isolation efficiency when the permeability is large.
