Damage Detection of Metro Tunnel Structure Through Cross Correlation Analysis

The health of metro tunnel structure is closely related to public safety. The goals of structural health monitoring are to reduce operational and maintenance costs and enhance structural safety. Many vibration-based techniques for detecting and locating structural damage have been de veloped in previous research; however, most techniques and tests are applied in bridges, build ings, and very few can be found in tunnel structure monitoring.Cross correlation analysis, a struco tural diagnostic approach, can be used to detect and locate damage through time domain information obtained from structural vibration sensor arrays.Furthermore, cross correlation can be calculated directly from structural response without excitation measurement, which gives advantages in large infra-structure testing. In this paper, a 3D numerical model of metro tunnel is built and different types of structural defects are ideally set on different locations of the tunnd model.Cross correlation analysis is applied to conduct structural damage detection and localization by measured structural vi bration data, the numerical results show that the presupposed defects can be successfully identified and located. The sensitivity and feasibility of cross correlation analysis has been verified when suffi cient distribution of measuring points were set.The deployment of dense wired sensor array is labor costly and expensive, compared with the traditional wired sensors; the rapid development of wire less sensor network technology makes it easy and cheap to deploy large sensor arrays. At the same time, the onboard computing and storage capacity of wireless sensing units make it feasible to detect and localize damage decentralized. At the end, the application prospect of combining the cross cor relation analysis with wireless sensing units in metro tunnel structural health monitor is discussed in future research work.
