Liquefaction Mechanism for Saturated Sand Around Underground Structure:Centrifuge Model Tests and Microstructural Analyses

Based on centrifuge model tests and digital image processing technology, this paper pro vides new insights into the liquefaction mechanism for saturated sand and the uplift behavior of un derground structure under seismic action.A series of dynamic centrifuge model tests on saturated sand deposits with and without structure model were performed.Herein, a high-speed microscopic camera was installed in the structure model, by which the movements of particles around under ground structure were recorded. Then a two-dimensional digital image processing technology was used to analyze the microstructure of the saturated sand during the shaking event. The models invol ving structure model show that high excess pore pressure occurs around the bottom of the structure. In the case of shallow buried structure, uplift behavior of structure model can be observed signifi cantly.Micro mechanical explanations obtained from centrifuge model tests are presented to prove the phenomenon of saturated sand liquefaction in macro-scale.
