Simultaneous quantification of 54 trace odor compounds in drinking water using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Odor problems in drinking water were caused by various odor compounds. In this research, a new comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with full scan time-of-flight mass spectrometry method was developed to analyze different kinds of odor compounds (total of 54 odor compounds). All the odor compounds were divided into three groups, the instrument detection limits and quantification limits of the three groups were 0.007-5.29ng/L, 2.16-6.88ng/L, 0.10-18.18ng/L and 0.02-17.6ng/L, 7.22-22.9ng/L, 13.3-60.6ng/L, respectively. The averge overall method recoveries for most of the compounds in ultrapure water and sample were about 70%-80% while the precision were about 7%-15%.The method was applied to analyze water samples from rivers in south China.21 odor compounds were detected and quantified. The developed method provides a new method to sensitively determine and quantify odor compounds in environmental samples.
