Characterization of iron release fed with desalinated seawater in drinking water distribution systems:mechanism analysis and control technologies
This study investigated the effect of feeding desalinated seawater on iron release in drinking water distribution systems. The iron release rates of pipes in desalinated seawater with different chloride concentrations were analyzed with pipe section reactors. The results showed that desalinated seawater could probably lead to red water problem.Iron release of corrosion scales had a good correlation with chloride, when chloride concentration increased from 50 mg/L to 240 mg/L, the total iron concentration after 8 h could increased to as much as 8.00 mg/L.The control measures, including adjusting pH, alkalinity, hardness and adding polyphosphate inhibitor on iron release were investigated. It was found that the iron release decreased significantly with increase of pH, alkalinity and hardness, as well as adding inhibitor.
