Exploration of optimization the two-stage and three-stage process for PHA production
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a class of polymers synthesized by the microorganisms in the unbalanced nutritional conditions which played the role of accumulating carbon source and balancing ions inside and outside of cells in the microbial metabolism. Its physical properties was similar to polypropylene and other chemical plastic, non-toxic, harmless and fully degradable in nature, was expected to replace chemical plastics for solving the problem of white pollution. However, the high cost prevented PHA large-scale applications, when using the mixed bacteria in place of the pure bacteria, such as activated sludge wastewater instead of glucose, fructose and other carbon substrates containing small molecules of fatty acids, can at the same time reducing the cost of production of the PHA, but also can be achieved waste sludge reduction.
