Innovation and Application of Key Technologies for Xiaowan Arch Dam
Xiaowan Arch Dam is the highest double-curvature arch dam in operation in the world, therefore many of its technical problems rank first in the world and beyond the existing specifications and the previous level of awareness.In the past 20 years, research has been systematically carried out to deal with the key technical issues of Xiaowan Arch Dam.Lots of experiments and research were performed on the following eight topics : shape structural optimization of the arch dam, design for ultra-high slope treatment, treatment for unloading and relaxation of dam foundation rock during excavation, concrete temperature crack control for ultra high arch dam, research for flood discharge energy dissipation and atomization anti-seismic technologies and measures for ultra-high arch dam , safety monitoring technologies of 300 m grade arch dam and key technologies for safe operation of arch dam during reservoir impounding .Many innovative results have been achieved as follows: the shape optimization of arch dam was carried out and some new measures were proposed such as setting induced joints, seepage system on upstream face of dam, reinforcement for resistance body and the fillet anchor cable in dam toe ; ultra high slope excavation and support principles were summarized as clearing up slope highly, opening lowly, excavating steeply, support strongly, locking first and draining ahead ; treatment principles and measures for strong relaxation and uploading problem were proposed during excavation in mountains & valley area with high ground stress; technology roadmap for concrete temperature crack control was proposed and implemented as high strength, medium elastic modulus, low hydration heat, micro expansion, large ultimate tension value ; the flood discharge energy dissipation way of monomer diffusing laterally, layered opening longitudinally, as a whole into water of the stilling basin was realized and achieved a better effect of energy dissipation; based on artificial neural network technology, a prediction model for discharge atomization was established; integrated seismic measures which combined damper with seismic reinforcement in both beam direction and arch direction were investigated and practiced; safe monitoring system for 300 m grade high arch dam was systematically proposed, and monitoring equipments and means were innovated; an analysis procedure of multi-stage prediction feedback simulation based on monitoring data analysis was developed to evaluate the safety of high arch dam during initial reservoir impoundment ; prediction & warning model and method for performance of high arch dam were proposed based on the simulation of whole construction process.Based on the above research results, the design principle, construction technology and safety evaluation criteria of ultra-high arch dam were proposed systematically and applied to the construction of Xiaowan Arch Dam successfully; at present the developed procedures are being applied to the project practice of several ultra-high arch dams in southwestern region of China.
