Rocfill Deformability-Discussion on the Behavior of Brazilian Rockfill Dams
This paper was prepared for a speech delivered at the Pan-American Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (Foz do Iguacu, August 1999) and is published here, because it is the basis for the keynote speech the author will present at this symposium.Additional information will be added, mainly regarding the fact that most of the deformation moduli presented in 1999 where hand calculated and that we have now finitè element analyses results for several dams.Brazil has a large number of high rockfill dams. Most of them were instrumented and provide significant information regarding rockfill deformability. In the paper below results of monitoring together with design details for 8 of these dams were analyzed, resulting in the conclusion that the main factor as regards deformability is the compaction characteristics.A lot of high rockfill dams have been built in Brazil in the last 40 years. Many of them have been instrumented and have their data published. In an attempt to contribute to the knowledge of rockfill deformability, data from 8 of such dams are analyzed and discussed hereafter providing very good information on this subject. The list of the dams and their heights is shown in Figure 1.Foz do Areia (owned by COPEL) and Xingó (owned by CHESF) are concrete faced rockfill dams, the others are core dams.It should be noticed that the upstream and downstream slopes are fairly to highly steep.
