Introduction of Vertical Drains as a Safety Measure for Concrete Face Dams (CFRDs) with New Materials Located in Seismic Areas
The design of Concrete Face Rockfill Dams (CFRDs) has been progressing continuously with the presence of new materials and also with the performance of these structures when faced with seismic events, as presented during 2008 in China (Wenchuan Quake, May 12th) and in Japan (Iwate Miyasi Quake, June 14th).This paper discusses the introduction of vertical drains as a practical safety measure to prevent saturation of the downstream body of the dam and present the conceptual design adopted in some dams with new materials inside the rockfill already built and under construction in Central and South American Countries.
