Study on Key Technical Issues of the High Clay Core Rockfill Dam of Lianghekou Hydropower Station
Lianghekou Hydropower Station is a controlling reservoir in the middle and lower reaches of the Yalong River, and its 295 m-high gravelly clay core rockfill dam is one of the highest embankment dams in the world.Key technical issues have been encountered during design and construction of the dam, such as high content of silty slate in rockfill materials, high breakage ratio of rockfill materials caused by compaction; great difference in properties of core materials from 5 proposed borrow areas; large volume of dam embankment up to 42 000 × 103 m3 versus short annual effective construction period and high construction intensity.In addition, stability, deformation, seepage control measures, and aseismatic construction are also important issues to a 300 m-class rockfill dam.In order to solve these issues, on the basis of experience of both home and abroad in construction of embankment dams, a series of important experiments and analysis were carried out during the stages of feasibility study and bidding design.These studies focused on selection and optimization of soil borrow areas and rock quarries, static and dynamic characteristics of and rheological and wetting effects on dam materials, sensitivity analysis of dam materials parameters, impact of rockfill materials breakage on their mechanical parameters, three-dimensional finite element analysis on static and dynamic stress-strain of the dam, zoned structural design and anti-seismic design of the dam, seepage characteristics and its control measures of dam embankment and base, aggregate processing program and method of mixing gravels with the clay, selection of roller compactors and determination of compaction parameters for core and rockfill materials through in-situ filling and rolling tests, methods for rapid detection of dam quality, real-time systems for monitoring of dam construction schedule and quality, and traffic simulation analysis on dam filling.By summarizing the above work and experiments, this paper discusses the solutions for the key technical issues of the 300 m-class embankment dam.The paper has provided technical support for design and construction of Lianghekou dam, and may also be of reference value to other high embankment dams of similar nature.
