Emborca(ca)o Dam Stress-Strain Behavior in 28 Years of Operation
This paper aims to analyze the stress-strain behavior of Emborcac(a)o dam after 28 years in operation, by evaluating the possible factors that generated settlements higher than predicted for the upstream slope and the crest of the dam, during the construction and the reservoir filling, as well as the continuity of settlements, on short scale, in the course of time. The continuity of the process of breach openings on the dam crest is a factor also to be studied, considering that its stabilization after the reservoir filling was expected. The study was developed using numerical modeling, supported by GeoStudio 2007, Sigma computer system.Whenever possible, the numerical data were correlated with field instrumentation data, since many settlement and horizontal displacement instruments installed in the dam had been damaged during the construction period. The numerical modeling simulation and the field instrumentation data showed that three main reasons led to the excessive settlements observed, namely: deformability modulus of the rockfill compacted in 120 cm layers, lower than predicted in the design phase; high displacement of the clay core during the reservoir filling, due to the high deformability of downstream materials; effect of submersion and possible collapse in the upstream rockfill.Numerical devices were implemented to assess numerically the settlements along the time in terms of the reservoir level variations, as the computational system does not allow applying the h · raulic load of the reservoir on the dam core surface. The settlement modeling due to the reservoir impoundment, collapse and reservoir level fluctuations have proven to be rather compatible with the data measured at dam crest and the general behavior of the embankment.
