Evaluation Aspects and Criteria of Maximum Aseismic Capability for High Earth-rock Dam

After Wenchuan earthquake, evaluation of maximum aseismic capability of high earth-rock dam is required in China.Till now the comprehensive and thorough evaluation is done from the aspects of dynamic stability of dam slope, earthquake-induced permanent deformation, liquefaction safety, the stress state in concrete seepage structure, and so on, synthetically both by numerical method and physical model test, and this evaluation method is first applied in Changheba earth core rockfill dam project.Yet at present there are no uniform evaluation criteria, and the reason is found to be that numerical method and physical model test cannot fully simulate the reality, details of analysis method, limitation of earthquake damage information, and researchers individual understanding.New approaches are put forward to decrease the divergence of the criteria, for example, in slope stability analysis, the maximum thickness of the slope is stipulated no smaller than 5 m, and in stress analysis of concrete cutoff wall, both the compressive strength and tensile strength should considered, and relevant stress criteria is studied out.New criteria are suggested.
