Abnormal Behavior of Wawushan Dam Face Slab Caused by Inverted Water Pressure During Construction

  The concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD) of Wawushan located in Sichuan province is as high as 138.76 m.During the construction period in July, 2006, an extra torrential rain made the foundation pit flooding.Because of improper pumping, the level of downstream water was higher than the upstream water.Although the difference is only 2 m at most, the dam concrete face cracked caused by inverted water pressure, which is a rare condition for CFRD.The observers found the sudden change of the data measured by in-place inclinometers and joint-meters at the bottom of the concrete face slab and reported to supervisor in time.The owner and construction company paid great attention to the problem and kept the pumping balance between downstream and upstream water.In November of 2006, after the upstream water level of the foundation pit falling down, several cracks were founded across the left and right banks in the bottom of the concrete face.In this paper, the cause of the dam crack formation is analyzed synthetically.Consider that the main reason is the dams low capability of bearing inverted bending moment produced by inverted water pressure.The inadequate researches and attentions to the abnormal signals, e.g.sudden change of face gradient, affect the measures taking validly at that time.The author suggests that for the safety of dams, even though some abnormal phenomena cant be explained reasonably right away , it is still necessary to take positive steps and investigation and consider the most unfavorable conditions, because some simultaneous and correlative phenomena are intrinsic.
