Research on Damage Causes of Construction Joints of Sanbanxi Concrete Face Rock-Fill Dam

  The Sanbanxi dam, with dam height 185.5 m, is a high concrete face rock-fill dam which is famous at home and aboard.During the first storage period, the quantity of seepage once increased dramatically with the water level rising.The reason for this abnormal phenomenon, at first is to be thought that the face concrete cracked from the high stress point because of the compress stress concentration in the construction joint and extended to adjacent area rapidly.But after synthetically analyzing the data of seepage of the dam, strain and deformation of the concrete face, the relationship between them indicates that the construction joints concrete is not broken when the quantity of seepage began to increase rapidly.Based on this truth, the potential breaking process is deduced again and validated by the field measurement data of all the correlative sensors especially the reinforcement meters and the in-place inclinometers embed in the concrete face.The breaking process can be described as the bending moment of concrete face increases unduly for the reason that the upstream water lever raises too rapidly, the tangential dislocation between the lower surface of the construction joint that belong to the first phase project and the upper surface of construction joint that belong to the second phase project happens.The gap becomes the main passage of seepage.And then, the concretes of the construction joint compress each other and disintegrate.Consequently, the quantity of seepage increased.The breaking process deduced in this paper has reference value for the research of other concrete face damage in similar CFRD and also for design, operation and maintenance of high CFRD.
