Seepage and Leakage Detection in Dams
Seepage and leakage through dams often occurs but if those seepages or leakages start to increase or become turbid then engineers have to intervene to prevent failure.Internal erosion is recognised as one of the major causes of failure.Often we can see seepages and leakages exiting the dam, if the geology allows, but often we don t know where the water is leaving the reservoir, either through the abutment or foundations, or perhaps even through the dam.We certainly have not been able to predict where the flow is going-either through the dam or its foundation or both. The author has been involved with the application of a system which is able to trace individual leakage paths through, round and under dams. This allows targeted remedial works to be actioned and remedial works limited to identified areas-significantly reducing costs to the clients. This paper will identify the means by which the leakage paths are traced both in plan and elevation and then illustrate the effectiveness of the technique by a large number of case studies.
