Sustainable Reservoir Sediment Management for Siting,Design and Operation of Hydropower Dams

　　By trapping sediment in reservoirs, dams interrupt the continuity of sediment transport through rivers, resulting in loss of reservoir storage and hydropower production, downstream channel erosion, and destruction of downstream ecosystem.With the explosion of new hydropower development throughout Asia, Africa, and South America, there is increasing interest in techniques to pass sediment through or around reservoirs, both to preserve reservoir capacity into the future, and to minimize the impacts of sediment starvation on downstream environment.
