Concrete Dams for Sustainable Development in the 21 st Century
There are several definitions for sustainable development. The most complete was formulated by the interdepartmental committee of Rio(1992) : Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of present generation of all the countries and groups of population without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, contributing to maintain the biodiversity (fauna and flora). The major problems of the world population in the 21st century will certainly be the safe supply of ecological and renewable energy as well as the supply of water of good quality and sufficient quantity.Large dams are playing very important role in water resources management, for flood mitigation and clean energy supply, thereby promoting the sustainable development of society and economy. But growing concerrn over global warming and other significant ecological changes has spurred much debate in all fields of science and engineering. The concrete industry has increasingly been considered one of the largest contributors to these ecological changes.Concrete as the most widely used man-made product in the world and essential construction material for dams and hydropower plants must cope with the new objectives (sustainable development limitations) in near future.Concrete will be the first choice in dam construction industry, if it can fulfill the following requirements : (1) Selected on the basis of life-cycle cost and performance.(2) Use less energy resources in all stages of the products cycle.(3) Use more recycled waste and by-product materials....The main purpose of this paper is to review the concrete industry contribution towards sustainable development and needs for future improvements.
