Application of Multi-beam Sounding Technology in Security Management of Reservoir at Manwan Hydropower Station
Manwan Hydropower Station is the first large hydropower station established in the middle reach of the Lancang River with an average suspended sediment concentration of 5.047 × 107 t over years.The surveyed maximum sediment concentration is 14.3 kg/ m3, and the average sediment concentration is 1 kg/ m3.The reservoir of the station has been in normal operation for nearly 20 years.Along with gradual silting of the reservoir year by year, the dead storage and regulation storage of the reservoir is decreasing.During the first 20 years of operation of the reservoir, the reservoir scheduling had been following the operation mode of storing clear and releasing muddy.Each year around the flood season, the operation water level was lowered, and sand flushing was conducted through the sand flushing bottom outlets of the left and right banks to make water clear of each water intake in front of the dam, which effectively alleviated the regulation storage loss severity.As Xiaowan Power Plant on the upstream was put into operation for power generation, the regulation capability of the leading reservoir of Xiaowan Power Station had been shown since 2010.In order to give full play to the power generation capability, Manwan Hydropower Station had then started operating at a high water level all year round.As the operation mode of the reservoir was changed, the situation of sand and mud silting in front of the dam was also changed.It is a new topic that how to quickly grasp the siltation of the reservoir in front of the dam to ensure the safe operation of the reservoir.With the aim to balance contradiction between of the benefit of power generation and the harm of sand and mud silting, to timely and reasonably arrange sand flushing and to effectively evaluate the actual effects of sand flushing, in 2012, Manwan Hydropower Station introduced the multi-beam sounding technology during sand flushing before the flood season and conducted the survey on the reservoir in front of the dam both before and after sand flushing to bring visual survey results such as three-dimensional point cloud charts and underwater topography bathymetric charts.It provided an effective basis for decision making before sand flushing and effect evaluation after sand flushing, as well as realized the scientific evaluation on sand flushing, ensured the scientific decision making and rehable effect analysis, realized the delicacy management on sand flushing, and provided good experience for future security management of the reservoir.This paper mainly introduce the successful application of multi-heran sounding technology in security management of reservoir at Manwan Hydropower Station combining with the sand flushing at Manwan Hydropower Station before the flood season in 2012, for reference to the water and electricity industries.
