Towards a 300 in High CFRD
CFRD have been designed and built based on precedents that is the experience acquired from previous dams.Empirism always prevails from theory.Research on rockfill has mn more or less in parallel with dam construction, and sometimes they went together as happened in Mexico and Australia in the seventies under the leadership of on Raul Marsal and J.K.Wilkins.The marriage however didn t last long and CFRD followed the tradition of empirism. The relatively recent accidents that occur in 4 large dams, Campos Novos (2003), Barra Grande (2004), TSQ1 (2006) and Mohale (2007) were almost immediately absorbed by dams under construction and under design.A more or less radical change in the specifications regarding compaction took place. In the concrete face flexible materials have been introduced in the compressive joints and new water stops have been developed in other to prevent leaks in the concrete joints and interfaces with the plinth and the abutments. The result of these changes lead to more or less significant reductions of the leakages, and the displacements of the dam and the concrete face.Hilly sophisticated Mathematical 2D and 3D Models have been developed in parallel to dam design, and comparisons between predictions and performance have contribute to improve even more the mathematical models. This paper is an attempt to recall some basic principles of rockfill behavior and an attempt to reestablish the profitable union of theory and practice that may give support for a 300 m high CFRD.Data as a sort of precedent, regarding compaction shear strength and leakage is also included.
