Aging Modes and Remedial Measures for Concrete Dams

  Most of the concrete dams built between 1950 and 1970 in China are inevitably aging and it is of great significance to study the aging characteristics, aging rules and to recommend appropriate remedial measures for those aged concrete dams.Based on an analysis of the aging phenomena of dam concrete, the aging modes of concrete dams can be distinguished between internal-cause-driving mode and external-cause-driving mode.Aging caused by alkali-aggregate-reaction and leakage-leaching are two typical representatives of the internal-cause-driving aging mode of concrete dams.In this mode concrete dams will suffer an overall and deadly aging process and it will accelerate the external-cause-driving aging, in which the aging process starts from the surface layer of the dam and gradually grows inward.Aging caused by freezing-thawing is a typical representative of the external-cause-driving aging mode in which the aging range is limited in the surface layer of concrete dams.In addition, the external-cause-driving aging is inevitable while the internal-cause-driving aging is not.On the basis of introducing the latest worldwide developments in dam repairing field, repairing and remedial measures are proposed corresponding to the two aging modes of concrete dams.The slot cutting method to relieve the overstress and the grouting method are powerful in remedying concrete dams whose aging mode is driven by internal causes (such as alkali-aggregate-reaction and leakage -leaching).The impervious barrier method and the remove-old-overlay-new method are effective in avoiding and retarding aging driven by external causes.To sum up, eliminate factors inducing internal-cause-driving aging and avoid occurring of internal cause-driving aging is key to control aging, maintain the durability and safety of concrete dams.
