Karun 1 Hydropower Plant Rehabilitation Project in Iran,Turbine Repair and Refurbishment
All hydroelectric power plants require rehabilitation in their lifetimes to ensure safe and efficient operation.In this paper we intend to present a comprehensive hydropower rehabilitation project in Iran under consultancy and supervision of Mahab Ghodss consulting engineers.During rehabilitation of powerhouse, several objectives have to be accomplished such as increasing efficiency, prolonging life time, recovery of lost potential of hydroenergy and etc.Karun 1 dam and hydropower plant was established during 1974 to 1979 in south west of Iran on karun river.The reservoir capacity is app 3 billion cubic meters, hydropower plant is a surface type located at toe of the Dam with capacity of 940 MW including 4 units of 235 MW.Units are vertical Francis type turbines with design head of 165 m, water discharge of 157cms and nom inal speed of 166.7 rpm.Generators are synchronous type with 250 MVA capacity, 50 Hz, 18 000 V and main cranes are 2 overhead traveling cranes with total lifting capacity of 530 tons.Figure 1 shows a general view of Dam and HPP.Electromechanical equipment was designed and supplied by Alstom Company from France.After 35 years of operation it has been decided to start rehabilitation of electro mechanical equipment of power plant.The main concern in operation of units in this power plant is the temperature rise of generator windings beyond design value which limits the operation of units up to 180 MW.The main aim of rehabilitation in this powerhouse is to refurbish the existing electromechanical equipment and recover the existing capacity to its design value of 235 MW.In this paper we focus on rehabilitation of mechanical equipment.At the beginning, upon disassembly of equipment some major problems in mechanical equipment which affect the capacity of unit, including runner cavitation pitting damages, wearing and unbinding of T&G bearings surfaces, sealing and clearances of wicket gates and bushings, temperature rise in air radiators, scoring of servomotors, maneuvering problems in power pack of intake gates, oil coolers leakage and temperature rise and etc were identified which will be explained later on.According to above problems, different methods performed on repair, refurbishment and replacement of these equipments on the basis of rehabilitation standards are illustrated and final approach for each equipment is introduced, also turbine repair and refurbishment procedure is explained in more detail.
