Facilitating Effective Leadership Transitions in the South African Public Service
Leadership transitions are a challenging, turbulent and sometimes disruptive part of organisational life.Research points to the disruptiveness of un-/under-managed leadership transitions at management levels, impacting negatively on performance. There is a dearth of evidence-based research on leadership transitions in the South African (SA) public service. The intention of this exploratory study was to understand the experiences of executive and senior managers of transitioning in the SA public service. The findings present a challenging picture of leadership transition as incoming managers navigate through complex governance and administrative structures, systems and processes, with inadequate structured personal or organisational support, encountering discordant organisational culture and dissonant leadership styles. This study concludes that facilitated processes and structured support is essential to ensure the.continued well-being of the organisation and arriving leaders.Further in-depth research is recommended.
