Female Candidates and Vote Choice of Chinese Voters
Increasing studies show that voters make judgments about political candidates personal traits instantly on the basis of their facial appearance, and these inferences can influence subsequent actual or simulative voting behavior.Scholars and political observers have suggested that there are gender gaps on candidate evaluations: Female and male voters may evaluate candidates differently, so female and male candidates may be perceived in different ways. The current study seeks to investigate the political gender gaps through voting decision of voters under Chinas voting system and to examine the impact of different traits of candidates on voting decisions of male and female voters. One hundred and forty-one participants from a university of China completed two tasks in study 1, and two hundred and seventy-six Chinese voters from villages and cities participated in study 2.Standard regression analyses, binary logistic regression analyses and independent-samples t test are conducted in this study. The result indicates that the factor of gender play a significant role in voting decision: Male voters more tended to support male candidates while female voters didnt perform obvious gender preference on voting behavior. All voters regarded male candidates as more competent compared to female candidates, whereas female candidates were perceived as more trustworthiness relative to male candidates.Approachability of candidates is a valid predictor on voting decision of voters in all the experimental cases.
