Behavioral Responses of Zebrafish(Danio rerio)Exposed to Cadmium and Deltamethrin by Using a Real-Time Monitoring System
This study investigated and compared the behavioral responses of zebrafish (Danio rerio) under sudden stress from sublethal exposure to delta methrin (C22H19Br2NO3; 15 × 10-3 mg/L) and cadmium (CdCl2; 3.5 mg/L).The behavioral endpoints, including swimming speed, depth, turning frequency, and distance, were observed by a computer-imaging system for 3 h.Results showed that the first response to toxicants might be avoidance via increased swimming activity, followed by a second response of changed distnibution in the test chamber under continued exposure.Swimming speed increased immediately after exposed to two pollutants in accordance with the stepwise stress model (SSM).However, the distriboution in the test chamber started to change 20 min later.Fish exposed to cadmium stayed near the bottom, whereas fish exposed to deltamethrin surfaced more frequently than unexposed fish.In addition, the duration of increased speed and turning frequency under deltamethrin exposure was much longer than with cadmium exposure.Such clear differences might be attribouted to the different pathways and mechanisms of toxic biological effects.R is proved that these different responses of zebrafish do exist under different environ ment stresses, and this will increase the significance and usefulness of fish behavioral indicators for the detection of pollutants in water.
