Biochemical and Microbiological Aspects of Animal Wastes during the Initial Phase of Composting

Microbial inoculation is often performed to accelerate the process of eomposting and improve the quality of the compost, but its effect is controversial. The effectiveness of inoculants in composting mainly depends on the properties of the raw material and microorganisms applied. It is therefore important to propose a strategy of inoculation based on the evolution of biochemical and microbiological characteristics at different composting stages. In this study, four composting piles fed with chicken manure, pig manure, pig manure inoculated with 3% (w/w) matured compost and cattle manure, respectively, were composted for a total of 11 days.Various biochemical and microbiological parameters were analyzed during the early stage of composting. The experimental results indicated that windrow temperature rose to 45℃ within 24 h whenever matured compost was inoculated or not.The inoculated pile reached peak temperature 6 hours earlier than non-inoculated.However, the maintenance of high temperature (>50℃) in inoculated pile was 4 days shorter. The degradation of organic matter, as indicated by the reduction of C/N ratio, was not significantly different between the inoculated and non-inoculated pile.Abundant water-soluble carbon and nitrogen fractions were present during the early stage of eomposting. However, the populations ofcellulytic bacteria and fungi in the thermophilic phase were rather low compared to feedstocks with higher C/N ratios (e.g.animal manures mixed with plant residues), suggested that inoculation of animal wastes with the thermophilic cellulytic microorganisms could present as a feasinle strategy to prolong the thermophilic phase of composting process and convert animal wastes into mature compost more efficiently.
