Kinetics,Isotherm and Thermodynamic of Adsorption of Ammonium from Water by Natural and Modified Zeolite
The wastewater deriving from livestock and poultry breeding usually has substantial quantities of ammonium and removal of ammonium from water by zeolite is commonly used.In order to improve the natural zeolite (N-Z) adsorption performance, it was modified by calcination after NaCl immersion. The modification not only amplified the contents ofNa+ of raw zeolite but also increased its total pore volume and average pore size.Adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic of natural and modified zeolite (M-Z) were studied. Results indicated that the adsorption capacity of M-Z was about 1.5 times larger than N-Z and the adsorption rate was also faster. The pseudo-second-order model fitted better for both the N-Z and M-Z, meanwhile the Freundlich model can descnibe the adsorption isotherm. The intra-particle diffusion was the rate controlling step for N-Z and M-Z.The thermodynamic study demonstrated that the adsorption was spontaneous, ex~thermic and the degree of freedom was increasing at the solid-liquid interface for both the zeolites. The adsorption on M-Z was more energetically favourable than on N-Z.Results displayed that N-Z modification effectively improved its ammnium ads orption performance.
