Simultaneous Reduction of CH4 and N2O Emissions from a Forage Rice Field Fertilized with High-Load of Livestock Wastewater by Water Management and Fertilization Pattern
Forage rice field can be used for livestock wastewater disposal and feed production. However, the wastewater application causes high emission of CH4 and N2O.In this study, we attempted novel field managements called drainage before topdressing and low-load topdressing in the latter stage of rice cultivation to mitigate both CH4 and N2O emissions. Two water managements (Midsummer drainage (C) and drainage before topdressing (D) and two topdressing patters (High and low-load topdressing in the latter stage (H and L, respectively)) were conducted to evaluate CH4 and N2O mitigation, while arehaeal community was also investigated to clarify relationship between CH4 emission and methanogenic archaea.Chemical fertilizer application as basal (50 kg N ha-1) and 3 times livestock wastewater topdressing (214-244 kg N ha-1) were conducted. In CH, DH, CL and DL, cumulative emissions were 191, 158, 127 and 34.5 kg Cha-1 for CH4, and 0.52, 2.32,-0.18 and-0.21 kg N ha-1 for N2O, respectively. In CH and CL, abundances of the genus Methanocella, key methanogenic archaea, increased with time while the abundances were kept constant through cultivation period in DH and DL,suggesting drainage before topdressing effectively suppressed growth of Methanocella. In DL, carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) was the lowest among the treatments; 75-84% reduction compared with the other treatments. These results suggest that combination with drainage before topdressing and low-load topdressing in the latter stage is a useful manag ement for greenhouse gas mitigation.
