Nutrient and Microbial Loss in relation to Timing of Rainfall following Surface Application of Dairy Farm Manures to Pasture
This study investigated nutrient and faecal microbe (Escherichia coli; E.coii) loss in surface runoff in relation to increasing time (ranging from 0 to 20 days) between manure application and first rainfall event.Intact soil monoliths were contained in wooden runoff boxes and simulated rainfall used to generate flow.Manures of vary ing dry matter (DM) content, ranging from 3 to 14%, were investigated. Results indicated that phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and E.coli concentrations decreased with time since application due to chemical and physical breakdown of the manure.Greatest risk to water quality occurred when rain fall was received within two days of maure application. When the period between menure application and first rainfall event was 10 days or more, concentrations of N, P and faecal microbes was generally comparable to those from dairy grand pasture.Variation in DM content appears to have little effect on measured runoff concentrations. Results suggest a minimum o f 2 days prior to rainfall when apply ing manures.
