Behaviour of calcium sulfoaluminate cement in the presence of heavy metals
In this study, the influence of gypsum, types and concentrations of heavy metal nitrates Pb(NO3)2, Cr(NC3)3 · 9H2O on the hydration rates and phase compositions of C4A3S during the first 24h were investigated by iso thermal conduction calorimetry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermal analysis (DTA/TG).The addition of 20% gypsum to the C4A3(S) leaded to a rapid for mation of ettringite and acceleration of hydration. The effects of heavy metals on the hydration of C4 A3(S) depended on the types of heavy metals and the addi tion of gypsum.Without any gypsum addition, heavy metal nitrates such as Cr promoted hydration of C4 A3(S), whereas Pb presented a strong retardation effect at the early age of C4A3(S) hydration. When 20% of gypsum was added to C4 A3(S), heavy metals tended to accelerate the hydration of the blended pastes. However, heavy metal containing phases were not detected in this work.
