Thermal Strain of Firefighters during Training Simulating Live Fire,Maze Search and Tunnel/Chute
The study aims to investigate the tiiermo physiological responses and the changes in heat strain experienced by firefighters while wearing tiie No.3 uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE) of tiie Hong Kong Fire Services Department during rescue operations.Nineteen healthy male firefighters underwent (raining according to tiie guidelines and procedures for formal training set by the Fire Service Department to simulate actual rescue conditions. In investigating actual rescue operations, the simulated high temperature and humid condition were controlled by chamber. The existing PPE and No.3 uniform of the Hong Kong firefighters were used in the study.Core temperature, heart rate,micro-climate temperature and humidity, and mean skin temperatures measurements were collected in each study.Physiological strain index (PSI) values were calculated using the formula developed by Moran. The results showed that tiie core temperature, heart rate, skin temperature and tiie micro-climate condition of firefighters increased significantly during the firefighters (raining sessions compared to the values when tiiey were at rest. The PSI values revealed that tiie moderate to high levels of heat strain produced during tiie simulated firefighting activity.
