Evaluation of Effect of Aerogel on Thermal Protective Performance of Firefighter Clothing

The aim of tiiis study is to investigate the potential of application of aerogel in firefighter clothing.Thermal protective performances (TPP) of specimens containing various concentrations of aerogel were evaluated by flame heat transfer test according to ISO 9151 standard. The tiiermal degradation behaviour and water vapor permeability of aerogel treated specimens were also examined. The result showed tiiat aerogel incorporation could enhance TPP of specimens.Additionally, the comparison of the burn injuries predicted by instrumented manikin testing between aerogel treated firefighter clothing and existing firefighter clothing were performed. The results demonstrated that tiie aerogel treated firefighter clotiiing exhibited higher TPP tiian existing firefighter clotiiing.
