Aesthetic Characteristics of the Baoxiang Flower Pattern in Textiles of the Tang Dynasty in China

  The Baoxiang flower pattern came into fashion in the Tang dynasties and had an assortment of uses in Dunhuang wall paintings,costume of the colored Bodhisattva sculpture,and gold and silver utensils.It was considered by tiie Chinese to be an auspicious pattern rich in Chinese flavor,from which we could glimpse tiie living conditions,aestiietic tastes and cultural characteristics of tiie Tang dynasty.In this study,the aestiietic characteristics of tiie Baoxiang flower pattern were discussed.This pattern was made up of several layers of petals arranged in a concentrical manner.It proceeded witii tiie times as it continuously embraced new elements without a rigid adherence to one style.The basic colors of Baoxiang flower pattern included red,blue,green,white and yellow,and tiie rhythm was achieved by the variations of hue,purity and brightness of tiiese colors.This study underscored a need for inheritance and development of tiie Baoxiang flower pattern,as well as the weaving technology used to create it.
