Influence of reaction conditions on properties of HMTD
The influence of reaction conditions (specifically the type of acid and its concentration) on the properties of HMTD was examined.HMTD was prepared by the reaction of hexamethylene tetrarmine with hydrogen peroxide in an acidic environment.Acids easily available in improvised conditions were chosen for this study (hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, perchloric, acetic, citric and tartaric acids). The analysis of products was carried out using infrared spectroscopy. It was observed that HMTD was formed in all cases, and neither the type of acid used nor its concentration in the reaction mixture affects the composition of the product.Product mostly forms as a white powder. However when the concentration of acid in the reaction mixture was low (when molar ratio acid to hexamethylene tetramine was 0.5) needles several millimeters long formed in the case of monohydric acids.Thermal stability of HMTD is not affected by the type and concentration of the acid used in the reaction mixture. The results for friction sensitivity were the sameneither the type of acid used for HMTD preparation nor its concentration in the reaction mixture had any influence on friction sensitivity.Generally, friction sensitivity of HMTD is on the level of that for lead azide or even slightly exceeds it.
